FAQs

How many smoke alarms should I have?

The detection range of this alarm is 215–430 sq. ft (20–40 m²), so the number of alarms you will need is dependent on the size of your home. We recommend you prioritize the installation of alarms in bedrooms and hallways, and make sure you can hear the alarm from all sleeping areas. In a home with several bedrooms, install an alarm in every bedroom. If you are only going to install one smoke alarm in your home, install the alarm as close to all bedrooms as possible, and not in a basement or furnace room.

Why does my smoke alarm keep going off for no reason?

It could be that the room you installed the smoke alarm in is relatively humid, the temperature is too high or too low, or the alarm is clogged up with dust. We recommend you install the alarm in a recommended location, as indicated by the user manual, and clean the alarm every 3 months. If your alarm is still having problems, please contact our after-sales customer service via service@x-sense.com for help.

Why does my smoke alarm chirp intermittently?

If the battery starts to die or if the smoke alarm is faulty or has reached its end of life, the smoke alarm will chirp to let you know that it needs your attention. For more details, please refer to the user manual.

How do smoke alarms work?

Smoke alarms with sensing technologies work by constantly checking the air for traces of gas and smoke particles produced by a fire, and will inform you of fire hazards via the 85 dB alarm and a flashing indicator. They are usually powered by batteries or normal household wiring. There are 2 common types of smoke alarms—ionization alarms and photoelectric alarms.

Where do I place smoke alarms?

It is recommended to install a smoke alarm on the ceiling. Please follow the installation instructions to install your alarm properly:

  • Prioritize the installation of an alarm in the bedroom and hallways, and make sure you can hear the alarm from all sleeping areas. In a home with several bedrooms, install an alarm in every bedroom. If you install only one smoke alarm in your home, install the alarm near to all bedrooms where possible, and not in a basement or furnace room.
  • Install an alarm above the stairway and on every floor of the house.
  • Smoke, heat, and anything burning will spread horizontally after rising to the ceiling, so install the alarm in the middle of the ceiling where possible. Ensure that the alarm is installed at the minimum distance away from corners.
  • If an alarm cannot be installed in the middle of a ceiling, install it at a distance of 20 inches (50 cm) away from the corners of the room.
  • If an alarm is installed onto a wall, a distance of 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) should be kept below the ceiling.
  • If the length of a room or hall is beyond 30 feet (900 cm), several alarms should be installed in the same room.
  • When the wall or ceiling is angled, the alarm needs to be installed within 3 feet (90 cm) of the highest wall or ceiling point (measured horizontally) in the room.

How often should I check my smoke alarm?

Test your smoke alarm once a week to verify that everything is working properly. At a minimum, clean it once every 3 months.

When should I replace my smoke alarms?

Like most items, smoke alarms wear out over time. Smoke alarms should be replaced at least once every 10 years. Any smoke alarm over 10 years old is unsafe and unreliable. Refer to your manufacturer instructions for specific recommendations.
